SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module)

What the SDM does on your Chevy

General Motors calls its airbag control unit the SDM, short for Sensing and Diagnostic Module. It is the brain of the supplemental restraint system on every Chevrolet built since the mid 1990s. The SDM watches the impact sensors, decides when to fire the airbags and pretensioners, and writes a permanent record of any deployment into its memory.

Once that crash data is written, the SDM locks itself and the airbag light stays on. A standard scan tool will not erase it because the data lives at the module level. We take your original SDM in our shop, clear the stored crash data and hard codes, and return it reading factory-ready. It keeps its original GM calibration and VIN, so it plugs straight back in and works the moment you reinstall it.

Where the Chevrolet SDM is located

On most Chevrolet cars and trucks the SDM sits low and centered, under the center console between the front seats, bolted to the floor pan on the transmission tunnel. On the Silverado and other full-size trucks it is commonly found under the center console or beneath one of the front seats, mounted to the floor with the connector facing rearward.

You pull the console trim, disconnect the battery first, then unbolt the module from the floor bracket. The exact spot moves a little by model and year, so if you cannot find yours, call us and we will walk you to it. Always disconnect the battery and let the system discharge before touching anything in the SRS, since a deployment is still possible for a few minutes after the power comes off.
