What B0051 means

B0051 is a GM code that reads as Deployment Commanded. It does not point to a wire or a sensor. It is the module telling you it made the decision to fire the restraints, which only happens in a real crash event. Once that decision is logged, the module writes it permanently and locks itself so it will not arm again until the record is cleared.

Because B0051 is a stored event held in the module's memory, it behaves differently from a circuit code. A scan tool that tries to clear it returns an error like cannot execute routine. The deployment record is written to protected memory, so it has to be cleared at the module level in our shop, which is exactly what we do.

Common causes

• The vehicle was in an accident and the SRS commanded a deployment
• Frontal, side, or pretensioner restraints fired and the event was logged
• Crash data is locked in the SDM or ACM control module
• The light stays on and a standard scanner cannot turn it off

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is stored crash data. B0051 reports a deployment decision, which lives in the module's memory. The module hardware is usually fine, it is just holding a locked crash record. That is good news, because it means your original module can be restored and reinstalled. The companion codes B0052 and B0053 break this out into frontal and side deployment commanded, and both are crash data as well.

Does our reset clear it?

Yes. B0051 is a textbook case for our airbag module reset. We clear the deployment record and hard codes and return your original module to factory-ready condition. Because it is your own module going back into your own car, it keeps its original VIN coding and installs ready to go. A replacement module, OEM-pulled or brand new, would have to be reprogrammed to your vehicle first.

Which makes throw it

B0051 is a GM code. You will see it on Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, and older Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, and Saab vehicles. The Deployment Commanded meaning is consistent across the GM family.

What to do next

Have the deployed airbags and pretensioners replaced and confirm the car is properly repaired and safe. A reset clears stored data; the physical repairs are a separate step that has to happen first.
