What happens to your Malibu's module after a crash

The Chevrolet Malibu uses the SDM, GM's Sensing and Diagnostic Module, as the controller for its supplemental restraint system. It reads the sedan's impact sensors, decides whether to fire the front and side airbags and the seat belt pretensioners, and the moment it commands a deployment, it writes that event into permanent memory.

That stored crash data is why your Malibu's airbag light will not go out after an accident. The SDM reads its own deployment record, sets one or more hard codes, and locks. A standard OBD2 scanner cannot clear it because the data sits at the module level, not in the diagnostic memory a scan tool can touch.

We take your original Malibu SDM in our shop, clear the locked crash data and hard codes, and return it reading factory-ready. It keeps its original GM calibration and your VIN, so it plugs straight back into your car and works on the first key cycle. You reinstall the same module GM built for that Malibu.
