Tahoe parts are recovered from specific trucks here in Jacksonville, inspected and tested, then listed with real photos and prices in the Tahoe listings. Wheel airbags follow the trim on a Tahoe, and the leather and heated wheels are not interchangeable with the base wheel, so send your year and a photo of your wheel and we will match it. The other route is the mail-in SRS module reset, for when the module is good and locked crash data is all that is keeping the light on.
The Chevrolet Tahoe uses the SDM, GM's Sensing and Diagnostic Module, as the control unit for its supplemental restraint system. It monitors the impact sensors around this big SUV, decides whether to fire the front airbags, side curtains, and seat belt pretensioners, and the instant it commands a deployment, it records that event permanently in its own memory.
That recorded crash data is why the airbag light stays lit after a collision. The Tahoe's SDM reads its own deployment history, sets hard codes, and locks. Because the data is held at the module level, a regular OBD2 scanner cannot erase it. The light stays on through every key cycle until the module itself is reset.
We put your original Tahoe SDM in our shop, clear the locked crash data and hard codes, and hand it back reading factory-ready. It keeps its original GM calibration and your VIN, so it plugs back into your truck and works on the first key cycle. You reinstall the same module GM built for that Tahoe.
On the GMT900 and K2XX Tahoes, roughly 2007 through 2020, the SDM sits under the center console or the front jump seat, bolted to the floor pan on the transmission tunnel. On the earlier GMT800 Tahoes, around 2000 through 2006, GM commonly placed it under the carpet beneath one of the front seats. Tucked down low and centered, it is well away from the crush zones, which is why it usually survives the impact with its memory intact.
Disconnect the battery first and give the system several minutes to discharge, then lift the console or seat trim and unbolt the module from its floor bracket. If you are not sure which spot yours uses, call us with the year and we will point you to it. Do not touch the SRS with the battery connected, because a deployment is still possible for a short time after the power is cut.
GM uses B-series body codes for the SRS. Deployment and crash-data codes get cleared with a reset. Some point at hardware. Read yours and look it up before you ship.
