What the SDM does on your GMC

GMC and Chevrolet are built on the same GM platforms, so they share the same airbag computer, the SDM, or Sensing and Diagnostic Module. On a Sierra, a Yukon or an Acadia, the SDM monitors the crash sensors, fires the restraints, and stores a permanent crash record once the airbags go off.

That stored record locks the module and keeps the SRS light on. A scan tool cannot touch it. We reset your original GMC SDM in our shop, clear the crash data and hard codes, and return it factory-ready. It comes back with its GM calibration and VIN intact, so it plugs straight in and works the moment you reinstall it.

Where it lives

Where the GMC SDM is located

On GMC trucks and SUVs the SDM is usually mounted under the center console between the front seats, or under one of the front seats, bolted to the floor pan. On the Sierra it commonly sits under the console on the transmission tunnel with the connector facing the rear of the cab.

Pull the console trim, disconnect the battery and wait for the system to discharge, then unbolt the module from its floor bracket. The location shifts a little across the Sierra, Yukon, Acadia and Terrain, so call us if yours is hiding. Never work on the restraint wiring with the battery connected.
