What the SDM does on your Cadillac

As GM's luxury division, Cadillac shares the corporate airbag computer, the SDM, or Sensing and Diagnostic Module. On an Escalade, a CTS or an XT5, the SDM runs the supplemental restraint system, fires the airbags and pretensioners in a crash, and writes a permanent deployment record to its memory.

That record locks the module, which is why the SRS light will not go out on its own and a scanner cannot clear it. We reset your original Cadillac SDM in our shop, erase the stored crash data and hard codes, and return it factory-ready. Dealers often quote a new module plus programming for Cadillacs. Resetting your own part costs a fraction of that.

Where the Cadillac SDM is located

On most Cadillacs the SDM lives under the center console between the front seats, mounted to the floor pan, the same architecture as the rest of GM. On the Escalade, which shares the full-size truck platform, it can sit under the console or beneath a front seat. You remove the console trim to reach it.

Disconnect the battery and let the system discharge before you touch the restraint wiring. Then unbolt the module from its bracket and unplug the connector. The exact location moves a little between the Escalade, CTS, ATS, XT5 and SRX. If yours is hard to find, call us and we will guide you to it.
