What the airbag control module does on your VW
Volkswagen and Audi name the airbag computer the airbag control module, sometimes called the ACU. It runs the supplemental restraint system. It reads the impact sensors, fires the airbags and pretensioners in a crash, and writes a permanent deployment record, often logging the supply-voltage and crash data that keeps the warning light on.
Once that record is stored, the module locks and the airbag light stays on, and a generic scanner cannot clear it. VW modules are also coded to the car, so dealers usually want to sell and code a new one.
