What the airbag control module does on your Subaru

Subaru names the airbag computer the airbag control module. It is the brain of the supplemental restraint system. It monitors the impact sensors, fires the airbags and pretensioners in a crash, and stores a permanent record of the deployment in its memory.

That stored crash data locks the module and keeps the airbag light on, and a generic scanner cannot clear it. We reset your original Subaru airbag control module in our shop, wipe the crash data and hard codes, and return it factory-ready. It keeps its original calibration, so it plugs straight back in and works the moment you reinstall it.

On most Subarus the airbag control module is mounted on the floor near the center of the car, forward of the shifter and below the radio and HVAC stack, bolted directly to the body. On the Outback it sits under the radio area, and on the Forester you remove the entire console to reach the security Torx bolts that hold the module behind the lower console.

Disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes before touching the SRS, since the airbags and pretensioners can still deploy for a few minutes after the power is removed. Then unbolt the module and release its connectors. The location shifts a little across the Outback, Forester, Impreza and Legacy. Call us if you cannot find yours.

Subaru airbag codes we clear every day

Older Subarus store two-character codes like 11 or 22, and newer ones use five-character B-codes such as B1800. Firing-output and crash-data codes clear with a reset. Circuit codes point to the roll connector, a squib, or a sensor. Scan yours and look it up.
