01217 is the VAG fault code for the front side airbag igniter on the driver side, component N199. It is a five digit number rather than an SAE style B code, which is the first sign that you need a Volkswagen or Audi capable scan tool. The airbag controller measures the igniter circuit in the driver seat and sets 01217 when that measurement lands outside its window.
The driver side front airbag lives in the outboard bolster of the driver seat backrest. Its igniter, N199, is wired back to the airbag controller through a connector under the seat. That connector is usually yellow, and it is the most disturbed point in the circuit, because the seat slides, gets removed, and gets worked around.
The code carries an elaboration and the elaboration is most of the diagnosis. Ross-Tech documents four of them for 01217: resistance too high, upper limit exceeded, short to positive, and short to ground. The resistance readings point at connections and at the igniter itself. The two short conditions point at the harness.
One warning belongs at the top of this job. When the fault is short to positive or short to ground, do not clear the code. Clearing it in that condition can deploy the airbag. Read it, write it down, disconnect power, and repair the circuit before anything gets erased.
Circuit. The controller is reporting a resistance measurement it takes continuously, with no accident history inside the code. VAG keeps crash records under their own numbers, 00595 for crash data stored and 01226 for a driver side event, so a car showing 01217 with nothing in that range has an electrical problem rather than a locked module.
A driver seat that came out for a repair and went back in with the connector short of a full latch produces this code, and so does a seat that has been slid back and forth across its harness for a decade.
No, and on two of the four elaborations you should not even attempt it. A reset restores module memory, which does nothing for a circuit reading out of range, and clearing a short condition is the case that can fire the airbag.

01217 is a VAG number, so Volkswagen and Audi read it identically, with the same component designation N199. The companion codes follow the same layout: 01218 is the passenger side front igniter N200, 01219 and 01220 are the rear side igniters N201 and N202, and 01588 and 01589 cover the head curtain igniters. Ross-Tech adds a note for North American 2005 through 2007 Jetta, Rabbit, Eos, and Passat models, pointing to TSB 69-08-02 and reference 2011271.
Write down the elaboration, then disconnect the battery and wait before touching the seat. Slide the seat to reach the connector, release it properly, and look at the terminals and the lock. Follow the harness along the rail for chafe, and check the footwell for water staining, since a wet carpet and a corroded seat connector tend to travel together on these cars.
If the circuit checks out and the fault stays at resistance too high, the igniter in the seat bolster is the next item. Faults worth reading alongside this one are 01218 on the passenger side, 00588 for the driver airbag igniter in the steering wheel, and 00595 if the controller is also holding crash data.
