The 2019 redesign moved enough hardware that a 2018 part is a different order than a 2019 one, so include the year in your Forester search and we will confirm the fit against your VIN before it ships. Why your Forester airbag light will not go off

Subaru names the airbag computer on your Forester the airbag control module. It runs the supplemental restraint system. It reads the impact sensors, fires the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners in a crash, and then stores a permanent deployment record in its memory. That stored record is what keeps the airbag light on after a collision.

Once the crash data is written, the module locks. A generic OBD2 scanner can read the trouble codes but cannot erase the deployment data, because it sits at the module level and not in the engine memory. We reset your original Forester airbag control module in our shop, clear the crash data and hard codes, and send it back factory-ready. It keeps its original VIN-matched coding, so it plugs straight in and arms the moment it is reinstalled, which is how an airbag module reset by mail saves you up to 80 percent against a dealer module.

Where it lives

Where the Forester airbag control module is located

On the Forester the airbag control module is mounted on top of the transmission tunnel at the base of the dash console, in the center of the car between the front seats. To reach it you remove the entire center console, which exposes the module bolted to the floor. The wiring into it is wrapped in yellow, the same as every Subaru SRS connector, so it is easy to identify once the console is off.

Turn the ignition off, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least three minutes before you touch the SRS. The airbags and pretensioners can still deploy for a couple of minutes after the power is removed. The module sits in the same spot across the SG, SH, SJ and SK generation Foresters, though the console pieces you pull differ a little between the older and newer trucks.
