Why the CR-V airbag light stays on after a crash

Honda calls the CR-V airbag computer the SRS unit, the control module for the supplemental restraint system. It is a small square unit with two yellow connectors at the front. It reads the impact sensors, fires the airbags and pretensioners in a crash, and writes a permanent deployment record into its own memory along with the system's fault history.

Once that record is written, the SRS unit locks and the airbag light stays on. A standard scan tool cannot clear it because the hard codes live inside the unit. Whether your CR-V deployed one airbag or several, the unit has the crash on file and will not arm again until the data is cleared at the module level.

The CR-V has run through several generations, and the SRS unit stayed behind or under the center console on the floor. We reset every one from 1996 forward.

On a CR-V you remove the center console pieces to reach the unit, then unbolt it from the floor. Honda is strict about timing. Turn the ignition off, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least three minutes before you touch the SRS, because the airbags and pretensioners can still deploy for about three minutes after the power comes off. Call us if yours is hard to find on your year.

We restore single, dual, and triple-stage CR-V belts and free locked retractors so they hold the way Honda built them to.

We are honest about the limits. A module reset clears stored crash data. It is an electronics repair, so your CR-V has to be mechanically safe and properly repaired before the system goes back in service. If a code points to a damaged part rather than stored data, we tell you.
