Why the Accord airbag light stays on after a crash

Honda calls the Accord airbag computer the SRS unit, the control module for the supplemental restraint system. It reads the impact sensors, fires the airbags and pretensioners in a crash, and writes a permanent deployment record into its own memory. It is also where Honda stores the system's fault history, so it doubles as the Accord's crash recorder.

Once a crash record is written, the SRS unit locks and the airbag light stays on. A standard scan tool cannot clear it because the hard codes live inside the unit, not somewhere a generic reader can reach. Whether your Accord deployed one airbag or all of them, the unit has the crash on file and will not arm again until the data is cleared at the module level.

Accord generations and where the SRS unit lives

The Accord has run through many generations, and the SRS unit settled under the center console near the floor. We reset every one from 1996 forward.

On an Accord you remove the console and lower dash trim to reach the unit, then unbolt it from the floor. Honda is strict about timing. Turn the ignition off, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least three minutes before you touch the SRS, because the airbags and pretensioners can still deploy for about three minutes after the power comes off. If your Accord has side airbags, there may be a second control unit in the passenger seatback.

What we fix on your Accord

Module reset and seat belts, by mail

We do two repairs for the Accord. We reset the original SRS unit and clear the stored crash data so the airbag light goes out. We also rebuild the Accord seat belts, because after a deployment the pretensioners fire, lock, and the webbing can seize. We restore single, dual, and triple-stage Accord belts and free locked retractors so they hold the way Honda built them to.

We are clear about the limits. A module reset clears stored crash data. It is an electronics repair, so your Accord has to be mechanically safe and properly repaired before the system goes back in service. If a code points to a damaged part rather than stored data, we tell you.
