Why the RAV4 airbag light stays on after a crash

Toyota names the RAV4 airbag computer the center airbag sensor assembly, or airbag ECU. It sits at the center of the supplemental restraint system. It reads the front and side impact sensors, decides when to fire each airbag and pretensioner, and writes a permanent deployment record into its memory. On many RAV4 trims it also ties into the occupant classification system that decides whether the front passenger airbag arms.

Once a crash record is stored, the assembly locks and the airbag light stays on. A standard OBD2 scanner cannot clear it because the hard codes live inside the sensor assembly. Whether your RAV4 set off one airbag or several, the assembly has the crash on file and will not arm again until the data is cleared at the module level.

On a RAV4 you remove the center console trim to reach the assembly, then unbolt it from the floor. Disconnect the battery and wait for the system to discharge before you touch any yellow SRS connector. Keep the assembly flat and square so it reads crash forces correctly when it goes back in.
