Why the Camry airbag light stays on after a crash

Toyota does not call the Camry airbag computer a control module. It calls it the center airbag sensor assembly, sometimes the airbag ECU. It reads the front and side impact sensors, decides when to fire each airbag and pretensioner, and writes a permanent deployment record into its own memory the moment a crash is detected. On most Camry trims it also works with the occupant classification system that decides whether the front passenger airbag arms.

Once that crash record is written, the assembly locks itself and the airbag light stays lit. A standard OBD2 scanner cannot clear it because the hard codes live inside the sensor assembly, not in a place a generic tool can reach. This is true whether your Camry deployed one airbag or several. The light is the assembly telling you it has stored a crash and will not arm again until the data is cleared at the module level.
