What the airbag sensor assembly does on your Lexus
Lexus, like its parent Toyota, names its airbag control unit the center airbag sensor assembly. It is the brain of the supplemental restraint system, reading the impact sensors, deciding when to fire the airbags and the belt pretensioners, and writing a permanent record of any deployment into its memory. Because Lexus is the luxury side of the Toyota family, the same engineering carries over from the ES and RX down to the IS and GX.
Here is the part that catches Lexus owners off guard. On Toyota and Lexus, the crash record is a hard code that lives inside the assembly, and sometimes there is no scan code at all, just stored crash memory holding the light on. A standard scan tool will not touch it, and a dealer will tell you to buy a whole new assembly.
