ORC (Occupant Restraint Controller)

What the ORC does on your Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee runs the Mopar airbag computer it shares with Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler, the ORC, or Occupant Restraint Controller. It tests each airbag squib circuit at startup, fires the airbags and seat belt pretensioners in a crash, and writes a permanent deployment record into memory. That stored crash event is what holds your airbag module reset hostage and keeps the airbag light on after a collision.

The data lives inside the ORC, so a generic OBD2 scanner cannot erase it. Clear a Grand Cherokee hard code with a code reader and it comes right back. We reset your original Grand Cherokee ORC in our shop, wipe the stored crash data and hard codes, and send it back reading factory-ready. It plugs straight back in. A dealer would otherwise sell you a new ORC and initialize it with a factory scan tool, which is the expensive way to solve a problem your own module can solve.

Where the Grand Cherokee ORC is located

On the Grand Cherokee the ORC sits under the center console between the front seats, beneath the storage bin area, mounted to the floor on the transmission tunnel. It is held by three nuts on the studs of a steel bracket welded to the tunnel, the Mopar floor-tunnel three-nut mount shared across the Ram, Dodge, and Jeep lines.

You pull the console trim to reach it. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable and wait about two minutes for the system to discharge before touching the restraint wiring. Then back off the three nuts, lift the ORC off the studs, and release the connector. If the floor took damage in the collision, straighten the bracket before reinstalling.
