Why your Durango airbag light will not go off

Dodge names the airbag computer on your Durango the occupant restraint controller, the ORC. It is the brain of the supplemental restraint system. Inside the die-cast aluminum housing are the microprocessor, an impact sensor, a safing sensor, and an energy storage capacitor. The ORC sends a test current to the squibs to check the wiring, fires the airbags and seat belt pretensioners in a crash, and then writes a permanent deployment record into its memory. That record is what keeps the airbag light on after an accident.

Once the crash data is stored, the ORC locks. A standard OBD2 scanner can read the codes but cannot erase the deployment data, because it lives at the module level. We reset your original Durango ORC in our shop, wipe the crash data and hard codes, and return it factory-ready. It keeps its original Mopar coding and your VIN, so it plugs straight back in and works on the first key cycle, which is how a mail-in airbag module reset saves you up to 80 percent against a dealer ORC.

Where the Dodge Durango ORC is located

On the Durango the ORC is mounted on the floor at the center of the car, secured with three screws to a steel bracket welded onto the top of the transmission tunnel just behind the front seat crossmember, directly behind the gear selector and concealed below the center floor console. To reach it you remove the center console, which exposes the ORC on the tunnel, then release its connectors.

Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery, and let the system discharge before you touch any SRS connector. The airbags and pretensioners can still deploy for a short time after the power is removed. The ORC sits in the same center-tunnel spot across the older body-on-frame Durango and the newer WD generation that shares its platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
