Ford Mustang seat belts, airbags, and RCM reset

Convertible Mustangs supply parts a coupe cannot use, and the front pretensioner sets recovered from the 2015 to 2017 convertibles are black and sold as a left and right pair. Look through the Mustang parts for your year, body style, and belt color before you order, since the belts and wheel airbags changed with each refresh. On the service side we reset the RCM and rebuild fired belts you mail to the shop.

What the RCM does on your Mustang

Ford calls the Mustang airbag computer the RCM, the Restraint Control Module. It reads the crash sensors, fires the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners when an impact crosses the threshold, and writes a permanent deployment record into memory. On the early cars the system logged a code 19 on the dash, on the newer cars it is a stored B-series crash event, but the result is the same: the SRS light stays on after a collision.

The data lives inside the RCM, so a generic OBD2 scanner cannot erase it. Clear a Mustang hard code with a code reader and it returns the moment you key the ignition. We reset your original Mustang RCM in our shop, wipe the stored crash data and hard fault codes, and send it back reading factory-ready. Where the Mustang RCM is located

The Mustang RCM location shifted across the platforms. On the SN95 cars of the nineties and early two-thousands the module mounts on the center tunnel under the instrument panel, in front of the shifter. On the S550 cars from 2015 forward the RCM moved into the center console, with the wiring running through the firewall to reach it.

Wherever it sits, the module has to go back flat and square on its bracket so it reads crash forces correctly. Pull the console trim or the lower dash panel to reach it, unbolt it, and release the connector. Disconnect the battery and let the system discharge before you touch any of the restraint wiring.

We also rebuild the seat belts, single, dual, and triple-stage pretensioners on the Mustang returned to factory operation, locked retractors freed, and worn webbing addressed. We will always be straight with you: a module reset clears the stored crash codes, it does not repair physical damage. Your Mustang has to be mechanically fixed and the airbags and belt hardware properly replaced before the restored module goes back in. We handle the electronics. You make sure the car is safe.
