What B1193 means

On Ford and Mazda vehicles, the airbag computer is the restraint control module, or RCM. When the car is in a crash, the RCM writes the event into its crash memory. B1193 sets when that memory is full and locked, which is the module's way of saying it has already stored a crash and will not store another, and will not arm again, until the record is cleared.

B1193 is a stored event written to the RCM's crash memory, which is why a generic scan tool cannot erase it. Try to clear it from the driver seat and you get an error like cannot execute routine. The data has to be cleared at the module level in our shop, which is the work we do every day.

Common causes

• The vehicle was in an accident and the RCM recorded the crash event
• Crash memory is full and locked, blocking new events and arming
• The airbag light stays on and a standard scanner cannot turn it off
• Deployed airbags or pretensioners often accompany it, though not always

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is stored crash data. B1193 is the clearest sign that what you have is a locked module. The RCM hardware is typically fine. It just needs the crash record cleared so it returns to factory-ready operation. That is the best case for an owner, because your original module can be restored and reinstalled.

Because it is your own module returning to your own vehicle, it keeps its original VIN coding and installs ready to go. A replacement RCM would have to be reprogrammed to your vehicle first.
