B1B06: Driver Airbag Squib 2 Circuit Open

B1B06 means the occupant restraint controller found an open on the driver airbag squib 2 circuit, which is the second stage of a dual stage driver bag. The first stage can read perfectly fine while this code is set. The repair is in the circuit or the bag, so a module reset has nothing to do with it.

Circuit fault

What B1B06 means

A dual stage driver airbag has two initiators inside it. Squib 1 fires on its own in a moderate hit, and the ORC brings squib 2 in when the crash is severe enough to need the full inflator. Both pairs of wires run up through the clockspring, and the module checks both every time the key comes on.

The factory definition is DRIVER AIRBAG SQUIB 2 CIRCUIT OPEN. With the ignition on, the ORC monitors the resistance of the driver squib 2 circuits, and B1B06 sets when it reads an open or a resistance high enough that the second stage could not be counted on. The wires it is watching are labeled (R61) driver squib 2 line 2 and (R63) driver squib 2 line 1.

Because the two stages share the same connector and the same clockspring, a fault that only shows on stage 2 usually means one pin pair has a problem rather than the whole connector being loose. If the whole connector were unseated you would be looking at B1B02 as well.

Common causes

Crash data or hardware fault?

Circuit fault. The ORC takes this resistance reading live on every ignition cycle, so B1B06 records nothing about the vehicle's past and puts no lock on the module. Once the stage 2 path reads right, the module drops the code during its next self test.

Does our reset clear it?

No. There is no stored data behind B1B06 to erase. A module reset restores a module holding crash data, and this code is a broken electrical path between the ORC and the second initiator in the driver bag.

Reseat the airbag connector first, then work the clockspring and the harness. If the clockspring is the failure we stock genuine OEM clocksprings, and if the bag itself has an open initiator we carry driver airbags by year and interior color. Our airbag module reset only enters the picture if that same vehicle is also holding deployment data from a collision.

Which makes throw it

B1B06 with this squib 2 wording belongs to the Chrysler group vehicles built around an ORC, which covers Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram from roughly 2006 into the mid 2010s. The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee service manual carries it, as do the Dodge Journey, Dodge Durango, and Chrysler 200 books. Newer FCA platforms report driver stage 2 problems as B0002 instead. Be aware that some code lists online have B1B06 mislabeled as a passenger side code, and the factory chart puts it on the driver bag.

What to do next

Disconnect the battery, wait two minutes, then pull the driver airbag and look at the stage 2 half of the squib connector specifically. Check for a terminal that has backed out and for a lock that never clicked home. If that end is clean, the clockspring is next, and the wiring between the column and the ORC after that.

B1B02 is the same fault on stage 1, B1B0E is the passenger side version of stage 2, and B0002 is the generic driver frontal stage 2 code you will see on newer vehicles.
