Why the Sentra airbag light stays on after a crash

Nissan calls the Sentra airbag computer the air bag diagnosis sensor unit. It is the control unit for the supplemental restraint system. It receives signals from the crash-zone sensor in front of the radiator and the side satellite sensors on the pillars, decides how the airbags and pretensioners should deploy based on the type and severity of the collision, and writes a permanent deployment record into its memory.

Once that crash data is stored, the unit locks and the airbag light stays on. A standard OBD2 scanner cannot clear it because the hard codes live inside the sensor unit. Whether your Sentra deployed one airbag or several, the unit has the crash on file and will not arm again until the data is cleared at the module level.

On a Sentra you remove the center console trim and the surrounding panels to reach the unit, then unbolt it from the floor. Turn the ignition off, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least three minutes before you touch any of the yellow SRS connectors, because the airbags and pretensioners can still deploy for about three minutes after the power comes off.
