B1B19: Left Side Curtain Squib 1 Circuit High

B1B19 means the occupant restraint controller found voltage sitting on the left side curtain squib 1 circuit. Those wires are supposed to float, connected to neither power nor ground, so any voltage on them is a fault. The short is almost always where the curtain harness runs alongside a powered circuit.

Circuit fault

What B1B19 means

The ORC keeps every squib pair in a floating state so nothing outside the module can fire a bag. For the left curtain that pair is (R1) left curtain squib 1 line 2 and (R3) left curtain squib 1 line 1. With the ignition on, the module watches the voltage on those two wires.

B1B19, written in the manual as LEFT SIDE CURTAIN SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT HIGH, sets when the ORC detects voltage there. A power source has found its way onto a curtain wire, and the module responds by flagging the circuit and lighting the airbag lamp.

Where that happens is fairly predictable. The curtain harness shares the A pillar and the roof rail with dome lamp feeds, sunroof motor wiring, mirror and antenna leads, and on many vehicles the wiring for roof mounted accessories. A rub through between the curtain pair and any of those puts battery voltage where the module expects none.

Common causes

Crash data or hardware fault?

Circuit fault. This is a voltage measurement the ORC takes on a live wire, so the code returns on the very next key cycle while the short is present. It carries no crash history and puts no lock on the module.

Does our reset clear it?

No. A module reset addresses stored crash data, and B1B19 is a live short to power that has to be found in the vehicle. Sending the module in will not change the reading.

Trace the harness first, since this one is a wiring job more often than a parts job. If the curtain bag turns out to be at fault we carry genuine OEM side curtain airbags, and if a front impact sensor was damaged in the same event that is worth checking too. Where the vehicle also has deployment data stored from a collision, that is the part our module reset covers.

Which makes throw it

B1B19 applies to Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles with an ORC and factory side curtain airbags, roughly 2006 to 2015. It is charted in the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2011 Dodge Durango, and the 2013 Chrysler 200 among others. Newer FCA vehicles fold left side curtain faults into the generic B0020 range. Body codes numbered in the B19 block mean something completely different on Ford and Nissan vehicles, so confirm the make first.

What to do next

Start with a visual on the left A pillar and roof rail. Drop the pillar trim, follow the curtain loom, and look for a shiny spot where it has worn against a body flange or against another harness. Check for aftermarket wiring in the headliner while you are there. With the battery disconnected and the curtain unplugged, measure the (R1) and (R3) wires to ground at the ORC end to confirm where the voltage is entering.

B1B18 is the low resistance version of this same circuit, B0020 is the generic left side deployment control code, and B1925 is the equivalent short to battery code on Ford vehicles.
