What B1612 means

Toyota and Lexus mount front airbag sensors up at the front of the vehicle, on or near the radiator support, where they detect a frontal impact before the center module feels it. The sensor communicates with the airbag sensor assembly over dedicated wiring. B1612 stores when that communication stops, leaving the module without its right front input.

Lost communication is a broader complaint than an open or shorted circuit. The sensor may have no power, the line may be broken, the connector may be corroded, or the sensor may have failed internally while still being connected. Each of those produces the same silence at the module, so the testing order matters more than usual here.

Common causes

• A corroded or unlatched connector at the right front airbag sensor
• Wiring damaged during front end, bumper, or radiator repair
• Loss of power or ground to the sensor
• Road spray and salt reaching the front harness connectors
• A failed front airbag sensor that no longer communicates

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1612 describes live communication, so it belongs with circuit faults and clears when the sensor starts answering. Crash data is stored separately and permanently on these vehicles. After a deployment the airbag sensor assembly locks, and no amount of code clearing changes that.

Does our reset clear it?

A module reset will not bring a silent sensor back. Once the assembly powers up it looks for the right front sensor again and stores B1612 if it is still missing. Which makes throw it

Toyota and Lexus both use B1612 for the right front airbag sensor communication line. The left side has its own number, so the code already tells you which corner of the vehicle to open up.

What to do next

Inspect the right front sensor connector for corrosion and a solid latch before you test anything, since front mounted connectors take the worst of the road spray.
