What B1617 means

Left front sensors mount on the driver side of the front structure and report impact data back to the central module. Communication runs over dedicated wiring rather than a shared vehicle bus. When messages from the left sensor stop arriving, the module has no way to confirm a frontal impact on that side and shuts the system down with the warning light on.

The front of the car is the worst environment on the vehicle for connectors. Salt, standing water, and heat cycles all work on the terminals, and any collision repair or radiator service puts hands directly on that harness. A sensor that is silent after front end work is far more likely to be unplugged or damaged than failed.

Common causes

• A connector at the left front sensor left disconnected after front end repair
• Corroded terminals from road spray and salt at the front of the vehicle
• A wire broken or pinched during bumper, headlight, or radiator work
• Missing power or ground at the sensor
• An internally failed sensor that no longer sends messages

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is a live communication fault, which puts B1617 in the circuit family. Restore the connection and the code stops being active. Crash data is the separate, permanent record these modules keep after a deployment, and clearing codes with a scan tool does not touch it.

Does our reset clear it?

Sending the module for a reset does not repair a communication line. The assembly looks for the left front sensor again on startup and stores B1617 if the sensor still does not answer. Fix the wiring or replace the sensor first, and use our reset service for an assembly that is locked with crash data.

Lexus carries B1617 for the left front airbag sensor in our lookup. The right side equivalent is a separate number, so the code tells you which side without any further testing.

What to do next

Start at the left front sensor connector, checking the lock, the terminals, and any green on the pins. Look for repair evidence in that area, since front end work is behind most of these codes.
