What B1512 means

The buckle switch is a simple contact inside the driver belt buckle. The module reads it to decide whether to chime, to set the belt reminder, and on many systems to adjust how the driver airbag deploys. B1512 sets when that circuit reads shorted, either to itself or to ground, so the module can no longer tell latched from unlatched.

Buckle wiring lives in a harsh spot. It comes up out of the floor or the seat frame, flexes every time the seat moves, and sits where drinks spill and shoes land. The switch itself is inside the buckle housing, exposed to whatever falls down the side of the seat over the years.

Common causes

• Corrosion or debris inside the buckle shorting the switch contacts
• A spilled drink that reached the buckle assembly
• Harness chafe where the buckle wire passes the seat frame
• A pinched wire from seat removal or console work
• A failed switch reading permanently closed

Crash data or hardware fault?

The module reads the buckle circuit live, which makes B1512 a circuit fault. Repair the short and it stops being active. Crash data is stored, not read: written when the restraints fire and held in the module until it is reset by someone with the equipment for it.

Does our reset clear it?

Clearing the code does nothing for a shorted switch circuit. The module reads the buckle again on the next key cycle and sets the code back. Clean or replace the buckle and repair any damaged wiring first. Modules that are locked with crash data are the ones we reset by mail.

Which makes throw it

Kia uses B1512 for the driver buckle switch. The passenger buckle has its own code, and Kia splits open circuit faults from shorts, so the number you pull tells you both the seat and the electrical condition.

What to do next

Disconnect the buckle harness and measure the switch by itself, since that separates a contaminated buckle from a damaged wire in one step. Look inside the buckle for dried soda or debris while it is out. A buckle that reads shorted with the harness disconnected needs replacing, and we stock genuine OEM Kia seat belt assemblies.
