B1493 means the SRSCM has lost reliable communication with the passenger occupant detecting system. That system is what decides whether the passenger airbag should be enabled.
Occupant detection uses a sensor mat or a weight sensing assembly in the passenger seat to judge whether someone is sitting there and roughly how much they weigh. It reports to the restraint control module over a communication line. B1493 is stored when those messages stop arriving or arrive in a form the module rejects, leaving it without an occupant status for that seat.
When this input goes missing, the passenger airbag indicator usually stops behaving normally and the SRS light comes on. The seat is the hard part of the diagnosis. Its harness runs underneath, the connector sits where feet and cargo reach it, and the sensing components themselves are built into the cushion.
The module is judging live communication, so B1493 sits with circuit faults and clears when the system starts answering again. Crash data is the category that does not clear on its own. It records a deployment, holds permanently, and needs the module reset before the system can arm again.
Resetting the module does not restore a conversation with a seat system that is not talking. Once the module powers up, it looks for those messages again and stores B1493 if they are still missing.
