B1513: Passenger Buckle Switch Fault

What B1513 means

Kia groups two electrical conditions under this one number. Open means the circuit is broken and no signal returns. Shorted to power means voltage from elsewhere is sitting on the line. The module cannot use either state to decide whether the passenger belt is buckled, which matters for the reminder system and for how the passenger airbag is allowed to deploy.

Diagnosis starts with figuring out which of the two you actually have, because they lead in opposite directions. An open sends you looking for a disconnected plug or a broken conductor. A short to power sends you looking for contact with a nearby circuit. A meter at the buckle connector answers the question in a minute.

• A broken wire where the buckle harness flexes with seat travel
• A failed switch inside the passenger buckle
• Chafed insulation letting the circuit touch a powered wire under the seat
