B1051: Driver Airbag Short to Ground

With B1051 stored, the driver airbag module circuit is shorted to ground. The firing loop has found a path to body metal, so the diagnosis sensor unit takes the driver airbag out of service.

Circuit fault

What B1051 means

This loop leaves the diagnosis sensor unit, runs up the steering column through the clockspring, and terminates at the driver airbag inflator. The module measures it continuously and expects a specific resistance with no path to chassis metal. When part of that current escapes to ground, the reading collapses and B1051 is stored.

Grounding faults come from insulation that has worn or from moisture bridging a connection. In the column, the clockspring is the moving part and it wears first. Below the column, the harness passes brackets and metal edges that will cut through a jacket given enough vibration and time.

Common causes

Crash data or hardware fault?

B1051 is a live measurement, so the module reports it only while the short exists and drops it once the loop reads clean. Crash data works on the opposite rule: written once during a deployment and held permanently, with no scan tool able to erase it. Repair the short and this code stops returning.

Does our reset clear it?

Repairing a grounded firing loop is not something a reset can do. The mail-in service clears locked crash data and restores the module after a deployment, and B1051 will set again immediately if the wiring is still bad. Repair the clockspring, harness, or airbag first, then use the reset only if the module is holding a recorded crash as well.

Which makes throw it

Infiniti and Nissan both carry B1051 for the driver airbag circuit shorted to ground. It is the ground side counterpart to the short to power code on the same loop, and both read the same across the two brands.

What to do next

Unplug the driver airbag and measure from the module side of the loop to a good chassis ground, because that single test tells you whether the short is in the airbag or upstream in the column. With the airbag out of the way, inspect the clockspring ribbon and the harness for worn spots. A shorted clockspring or airbag needs replacing, and we stock genuine OEM parts for Nissan and Infiniti. Related codes: B1050, B1054, B0023.

B1051 points at a circuit, not the module

Fix the circuit, then clear the code.

Trace the wiring and connectors first. If the module still holds the fault after the repair, mail it to us and we will clear it.
