What B1050 means

The driver airbag firing loop runs from the diagnosis sensor unit up the steering column through the clockspring and into the inflator. That circuit is supposed to stay isolated from every supply wire in the car. When the module measures voltage on it from another source, it stores B1050 and disables the system to keep the airbag from seeing current it was not commanded to receive.

A short to power comes from two conductors touching where insulation has failed, and the steering column is full of opportunities. Wiper and turn signal switch wiring, ignition switch feeds, and horn circuits all pass through the same area. Aftermarket work is a frequent cause, since remote starters and stereo installs often tap power right there.

Common causes

• Chafed insulation in the column harness letting the airbag loop touch a supply wire
• A damaged clockspring ribbon contacting a powered conductor
• Aftermarket wiring spliced into the column area during a remote start or stereo install
• A pin pushed into the wrong cavity when a connector was repaired
• Water in a column or kick panel connector bridging the firing loop to a power pin

Crash data or hardware fault?

Short to power is a live condition, so B1050 describes the circuit right now and clears once the short is gone. Crash data is the permanent sort of record, written after a deployment and locked where a scan tool cannot reach it. The two never get fixed the same way.

Does our reset clear it?

Clearing the module does not separate two wires that are touching. Our service restores modules locked on crash data after a deployment, and a circuit shorted to power stays shorted through any reset. Find and repair the short first. Where the car also deployed, the reset comes after the wiring work is finished.

Which makes throw it

Infiniti and Nissan both report B1050 for the driver airbag circuit shorted to a power supply. It reads the same on either brand, and the diagnostic path is identical.

What to do next

Disconnect the driver airbag and the module, then check the loop for voltage with the ignition on, because finding voltage on an isolated circuit confirms the short and tells you it is upstream of the airbag. Inspect the clockspring and the column harness for rub points and for any aftermarket splices. Repair the damaged insulation properly, and replace the clockspring if its ribbon is the failure.
