What B0078 means

Impact sensors sit out at the edges of the car, in the front structure and inside the doors, so the control module can tell how hard and where a crash hit. B0078 is the module reporting that the right front, passenger side impact sensor is not performing the way it should. On many vehicles that sensor sits inside the passenger door, toward the rear.

A performance code means the sensor is reading wrong, responding slowly, or struggling to communicate with the module. It is the front-end of the system flagging itself. That tells you the repair lives at the sensor and its circuit, which is why testing the sensor and its wiring is the first move.

• A failed or out-of-spec right front, passenger side impact sensor
• Damaged wiring or a corroded connector at the sensor, often after door or fender work
• Physical damage to the sensor or its mount from a minor impact
• A poor ground or harness fault on the sensor circuit

On its own, no. B0078 is a live sensor performance fault, so the light stays on until the sensor and its wiring are repaired. We say that up front, because sending in a module that tests fine wastes your time and money.
