B0077 means the sensing and diagnostic module lost a usable signal from the left front, or driver side, impact sensor. GM's side impact sensors are small electronic units that talk to the module over a two wire circuit instead of just closing a switch. When one stops answering, the module flags it and turns on the airbag light.
GM describes the side impact sensor, abbreviated SIS in the service data, as a unidirectional two wire circuit. The sensor modulates current on that circuit to send its identification, its state of health, and deployment commands to the module, and the module supplies both power and ground. At key on, the sensor runs its own internal diagnostics and reports an ID, which the module considers valid if it arrives within five seconds.
After that the sensor sends status messages continuously. If the module sees a problem, it does not set the code right away. It removes and reapplies power to reset the sensor twice, and only when the fault survives both attempts does B0077 get stored. That behavior matters, because it means an intermittent connection has to be fairly persistent to log this code.

B0079 sets when the sensor sends an ID that does not match what the module has stored, which is what a mismatched replacement part looks like. B0080 sets when the sensor reports itself as not OK, meaning the sensor itself has failed its internal check.
Hardware. B0077 is the module reporting that a physical sensor is not communicating the way it should, and the repair is at the sensor or the wire that feeds it. The code is not a crash record. It does show up on collision-damaged vehicles for an obvious reason: a side impact damages the very sensor that measured it, so the sensor is often replaced as part of the collision repair anyway.
No. There is nothing stored in the module to erase, and the code returns as soon as the module fails to hear from the sensor again. The fix is a working sensor on a clean circuit. Genuine OEM GM impact sensors are in the parts store, and matching the exact part number matters here because the module verifies the sensor's ID. If the same accident also locked the module with crash data, that module needs an airbag module reset after the sensor work is done.
B0077 with the driver side impact sensor meaning comes from GM class 2 era service information, roughly 2000 through 2007, on Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, and Pontiac vehicles including the Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, and Monte Carlo. Later GM platforms moved the side sensor codes to B0085 for the left front and B0086 for the right front, so the number depends on the vehicle's age.
Check the sensor circuit before you buy a sensor. GM's table has you test the communication status first, then look for a short to ground, high resistance, or an open in both the signal and the voltage circuits, and finally a short to voltage across the pair. Inspect the harness for cutting and chafing where it passes through the door or pillar, and confirm the correct sensor for the vehicle is installed.
If B0078 is stored at the same time, both sensors going quiet at once points at a shared power or ground path rather than two failed parts.
