What 85-61 means

Honda's occupant detection system reads what is in the passenger seat and reports it to the SRS unit so the passenger airbag can be armed, staged down, or switched off. The ODS unit sits with the passenger seat and communicates back through a harness under it. Code 85-61 means those reports stopped arriving.

Because the ODS unit hangs off the seat, its wiring shares every hazard the seat wiring does. Seats get removed for carpet and upholstery work and the plugs underneath get forgotten. Drinks spill, floors get wet, and connectors corrode. The code names the missing signal without saying whether the unit, the harness, or the connection caused it.

• ODS unit connector under the passenger seat unplugged or not fully latched
• Harness damaged or stretched by seat travel after seat removal or reinstallation
• Corroded connector pins from moisture in the passenger floor carpet
• A failed ODS unit that has stopped transmitting
• Aftermarket seat covers or seat heaters installed over the ODS wiring

Crash data or hardware fault?

What you are looking at is a live input fault, present only while the ODS signal is missing. Crash data sits in the module as a permanent record of a deployment that a scan tool cannot erase. Restore the ODS signal and 85-61 goes away on its own.
