What 85-71 means

Honda's occupant detection system has to learn its own baseline. When a seat, a seat back sensor, or the ODS unit itself is replaced, the system needs an initialization procedure so it knows what an empty seat reads like. Until that runs, the SRS unit has no trustworthy reference and stores 85-71.

This code is a procedure problem rather than a broken part. It shows up right after upholstery work, a seat swap, a seat heater install, or an OPDS sensor replacement, which is why the repair history matters more than any meter reading. Nothing in the seat has to be wrong for the code to be present.

Common causes

• A passenger seat, seat cover, or cushion replaced without running the ODS initialization
• An OPDS seat back sensor replaced and never initialized
• An ODS unit swapped in from another vehicle and left uninitialized
• Initialization started but interrupted before it completed
• Weight left on the passenger seat during the initialization attempt

Crash data or hardware fault?

85-71 describes the state of the occupant detection hardware rather than a live wiring fault, which is why there is no loop to chase with a meter. Crash data is a different record entirely: written into the module after a deployment and permanent, with no scan tool able to erase it.

Does our reset clear it?

The mail-in reset is not what clears this one. Initialization is done in the vehicle with the seat empty and the correct procedure, and no amount of module clearing substitutes for it. What to do next

Confirm what was replaced in that seat recently, because the repair history points straight at the answer here. Clear the passenger seat completely, including floor mats piled on it and anything on the seat back, then run the initialization procedure as Honda specifies.
