What 71-1X means

Honda mounts a position sensor on the driver's seat track so the SRS unit knows whether the driver is sitting close to the wheel or far from it. Deployment force is tailored to that answer. When the circuit to the sensor opens, the unit loses the input it uses to make that decision and stores 71-1X.

The sensor and its wiring live in the harshest spot in the cabin. Everything under a seat gets stepped on, vacuumed around, soaked by spills, and disturbed whenever the seat comes out. A harness that has been dragged by the seat track through thousands of adjustment cycles is the typical history behind this code.

• Seat position sensor connector unplugged after seat removal or floor work
• Harness pulled apart or chafed by the seat rails during normal adjustment
• Corroded connector pins from a wet carpet under the driver's seat
• A failed sensor that no longer reports its position

Crash data or hardware fault?

71-1X tracks a live circuit condition, which means it reflects the sensor circuit as it reads at this moment. That separates it from stored crash data, which the module records after a deployment and holds permanently no matter what any scan tool does. Fix the open and this one stops returning.

Does our reset clear it?

Module reset service will not repair a sensor circuit. It clears locked crash data and restores the unit, which matters after a deployment and does nothing for an open wire under the seat. Handle the connector, harness, or sensor first, then send the module in only if it is also holding crash data from an actual event.

What to do next
