32-9X: Passenger Side Airbag Ground Short

What 32-9X means

Each firing loop in the system floats free of the vehicle body so the module alone controls when current flows. The SRS unit checks the passenger side airbag pair against ground continuously. A grounded reading means there is a path outside its control, so Acura stores 32-9X and disables deployment until the path is gone.

Seat frames are made of metal, and the side airbag harness runs right across them. Anywhere the loom crosses a bracket, a spring, or the edge of a seat pan, it can lose insulation and touch. Moisture in the under-seat connector produces the same result, since a corroded terminal will conduct to the seat frame without any visible wire damage.

Common causes

• Insulation worn away where the seat harness crosses the seat frame or a bracket
• The under-seat connector corroded after a spill or a wet floor mat
• A loom pinched between the seat track and the floor pan at full travel
• A conductor grounded inside the seat back after seat cover or upholstery work
• Igniter insulation failure inside the passenger side airbag assembly

Crash data or hardware fault?

The reading behind 32-9X is taken live, every time the module runs its self test. Break the ground path and the fault stops being current on its own. That is the clear difference from crash data, which is written once at deployment and stays in the module until it is reset on the bench.

Does our reset clear it?

A reset will not separate the wire from ground, so it does not fix 32-9X. The module rechecks the loop at key-on and stores it again. Do the repair, then clear the code. If the car deployed and the module is locked on crash data as well, mail us the module and we clear that stored record once the physical work is complete.

What to do next

Move the seat to both extremes with the trim off and watch what the harness does, because a loom that goes tight at full travel is telling you where it is being cut. With the airbag unplugged, measure each leg to chassis ground.
