What 33-8X means

The side curtain deploys down over the door glass in a side impact or a rollover, and it fires on a monitored loop like any other inflator. The SRS unit watches that pair for voltage it did not put there. Battery voltage on the left curtain circuit produces 33-8X, and the module disables the system rather than leave a firing loop tied to power.

This circuit travels farther than most. It leaves the SRS unit, runs up an A-pillar or along a sill, and follows the roof rail behind the headliner to the curtain connector. Along the way it passes dome lights, visor lights, sunroof wiring, and door harnesses, most of which are hot at least some of the time.

Common causes

• Dome, visor, or sunroof wiring rubbed into the curtain pair behind the headliner
• A roof rail connector damaged during headliner removal or glass replacement
• Water from a sunroof drain or a leaking windshield reaching the pillar connector
• An aftermarket accessory tapped into the overhead circuit and touching the SRS loom
• A trim clip or a fastener driven through the loom at the A-pillar or roof rail

Crash data or hardware fault?

33-8X is a live circuit condition and not stored crash information. The module reports what it measures at the moment of the test, and the code stops being current once the voltage is gone. Crash data is written permanently when a bag deploys and cannot be removed by any scan tool, which is where a bench reset becomes necessary.

Does our reset clear it?

Resetting the module does nothing about the voltage on the curtain loop. On the next key cycle the SRS unit finds the same condition and stores 33-8X again. Fix the wiring first. If the curtain actually deployed and the module is locked on a crash record, our mail-in service clears that record after the curtain, pillar trim, and wiring have been properly repaired.

What to do next

Drop the A-pillar trim on the left side first, since that is the shortest path to the most commonly damaged section of this harness and it comes apart in minutes. Look for water staining, clip damage, and any wiring that was added overhead.
