What 32-1X means

This airbag is built into the outboard bolster of the passenger seat, and its firing loop runs from the SRS unit across the floor and up into the seat frame. When the unit tests that loop and measures no continuity, it records 32-1X and takes the side airbag out of service. The fault covers the whole path from the module pin to the inflator.

One detail matters on the passenger side: this seat gets moved by passengers, loaded with cargo, and pulled for interior work more often than people expect. The under-seat SRS connector is the weak link. Water from wet shoes and spilled drinks collects in the same spot, which is why corrosion shows up there before it shows up anywhere else in the loop.

Common causes

• Under-seat SRS connector unplugged or partly latched after seat removal or interior work
• Passenger seat harness cut or stretched by the seat rails during adjustment
• An open inflator inside the passenger side airbag assembly
• Corroded connector pins from carpet moisture on the passenger floor
• Damage from cargo or heavy items shoved under the seat against the harness

Crash data or hardware fault?

32-1X is a live circuit reading, so it comes and goes with the condition of the wiring. That is what separates it from crash data, which the module writes once after a deployment and holds permanently no matter what a scan tool tries. Repair the circuit and this code stops returning on its own.

Does our reset clear it?

The mail-in reset is not the answer to an open passenger side airbag circuit. It clears stored deployment data and returns the module to a ready state, and none of that repairs wiring. Handle the connector, harness, or inflator first, then reset the module only if it is also holding crash data from an actual deployment.

Which makes throw it

Honda is the make that reports 32-1X. It sits in the same side airbag group as the driver code, with 32 assigned to the passenger seat and the second pair describing the failure the unit logged.

What to do next

Get under the passenger seat and check the SRS connector before anything else, since a loose plug is by far the most common cause. If the connector is solid, measure resistance through the seat side of the loop to separate a harness break from a failed inflator.
