What 31-1X means

Side airbags mount inside the seat, so their wiring leaves the SRS unit, crosses the floor, and climbs into the seat frame through a connector under the cushion. 31-1X means the unit put current into that loop and nothing came back. Everything from the module pin to the inflator squib inside the seat back sits in the path it just tested.

Seat-mounted circuits take more abuse than dash circuits. The harness moves with every seat adjustment, gets stepped on during detailing, and lands right where floor water collects. When a shop pulls a seat for carpet or upholstery work, the SRS connector underneath is the piece that gets forgotten, and this code is what shows up afterward.

Common causes

• SRS connector under the driver's seat left unplugged after seat, carpet, or upholstery work
• Wiring inside the seat frame stretched or cut by the seat track or recliner mechanism
• A side airbag inflator that has gone open internally
• Corrosion on the under-seat connector pins from water or a spill in the carpet
• An aftermarket seat cover install that disturbed or pinched the side airbag harness

Crash data or hardware fault?

Everything in 31-1X is a resistance and continuity report, updated live. It says what the seat circuit reads at this moment and nothing about crash history. Stored crash data is separate: once a module records a deployment, that entry is permanent and a scan tool will not touch it. A live open like 31-1X clears when the circuit is whole again.

Does our reset clear it?

Do not expect a reset to solve this one. Our mail-in service clears stored crash data and restores the module, but an open seat circuit will set 31-1X again the moment the unit checks it. Fix the wiring or the inflator first. If the car deployed and the module also carries locked crash data, send it to us after the repairs and we clear that record.

Which makes throw it

Honda uses 31-1X. Within Honda's numbering, the 30 series covers side airbag circuits, with 31 assigned to the driver's side and the second pair identifying the specific fault.

What to do next

Look under the driver's seat first and confirm the SRS connector is latched, because a plug knocked loose during seat or carpet work accounts for most of these. If it is seated, unplug it and measure toward the seat to find out whether the break is in the seat harness or inside the inflator.
