What 2B means

Occupant detection components are matched to the seat and the vehicle they were built for. The control module expects sensing hardware with particular characteristics, and it compares what it finds against what it was built to work with. When those do not agree, it sets code 2B rather than trying to interpret readings it cannot trust.

This is a parts problem more than a repair problem. A seat from a different model or trim, a sensor from a donor car, or a replacement module that does not match the seat will all produce it. The hardware may be in perfect condition and still be wrong for the application.

• A used passenger seat installed from a different model, trim, or model year range
• An occupant detection sensor fitted that does not match the seat or module
• A replacement control module from a vehicle with different seat equipment
• Mixed components from two different donor vehicles used in one repair

Crash data or hardware fault?

Treat 2B as a live configuration and hardware complaint, not stored crash data. The module compares parts on every startup and stores the code again until the right components are in place. Crash data is written once at deployment, cannot be cleared with a scan tool, and is what a mail-in module reset removes.
