What 2A means

Occupant detection has to know what an empty passenger seat reads like before it can judge anything sitting in it. That baseline is set by a rezeroing procedure done with the seat empty and undisturbed. Code 2A is stored when the procedure does not complete, which leaves the module without a reference it can use.

Calibration failures are usually procedural rather than electrical. Something in the seat during the routine, a connector that was not fully seated, or a routine that was interrupted partway will all leave the module in this state. It also appears after a seat, cushion, or sensor has been replaced and nobody performed the calibration afterward.

Common causes

• Rezeroing attempted with weight, a seat cover, or an object on the passenger seat
• A calibration routine interrupted before it finished
• A seat, cushion, or sensing assembly replaced without running the procedure afterward
• A sensor reading out of range so the module rejects the calibration
• A poor connection at the under seat connector during the procedure
• Low or unstable system voltage while the routine was running

Crash data or hardware fault?

Code 2A describes a setup condition the module is reporting now, not a record of a crash. Run the calibration successfully and the code clears. Deployment records behave the other way around: they are stamped in when airbags fire, cannot be erased at the vehicle, and come out only through a module reset.

Does our reset clear it?

A module reset and a calibration are separate procedures. Our mail-in service clears stored crash data from restraint modules, and it does not set an occupant detection baseline. That calibration is done on the vehicle with the correct scan tool and the seat empty. Reset comes into the picture only if the car deployed and the restraint module is holding a crash record too.

Code 2A is the Subaru entry for an occupant detection calibration error. It commonly appears next to code 29 or 2B, and reading the full set matters, since a sensor fault will make every calibration attempt fail no matter how carefully the procedure is run.

What to do next

Clear the passenger seat completely and run the rezeroing procedure again, because a jacket or a floor mat leaning against the cushion is enough to make it fail. Confirm the under seat connector is latched and the battery is at a steady voltage during the routine.
