What 01589 means

N252 fires the curtain that drops down over the passenger side windows. The restraint module keeps a low current flowing through that igniter so it can confirm the squib is intact and correctly connected. When the value it reads back falls outside the narrow band designed into the system, the module records 01589 and stops arming that curtain until the reading returns.

Think of the code as a report on an entire electrical path rather than on one part. The path starts at a module pin, runs through the dash harness, climbs the passenger A-pillar, and ends at the igniter sealed inside the curtain module. Damage, corrosion, or a bad connection at any point along that run produces the same stored code.

Common causes

• A connector at the passenger A-pillar or roof rail that was unplugged and never fully reseated
• Harness damage from a pillar airbag replacement or a windshield job
• Water that reached the connector through a plugged sunroof drain or bad windshield urethane
• An open igniter inside the curtain assembly
• A curtain that already deployed and was replaced with a mismatched or damaged pigtail
• Corroded or backed-out terminals at the restraint module plug

Crash data or hardware fault?

01589 belongs to the live fault group. The module takes this measurement continuously, so the entry reflects the condition of the circuit at the time it was read and will clear itself once the circuit is right. Stored crash data is a different animal. It records that airbags fired, and it stays written in the module permanently.

Does our reset clear it?

A module reset is the wrong first move here. The N252 loop has a real electrical problem, and wiping the memory leaves that problem in place for the next self test to find. Repair the circuit, then clear the light. If the vehicle was wrecked and this code is sitting alongside deployment data, send us the module after the physical repairs are done and we handle the crash record.

Which makes throw it

Audi and Volkswagen both carry 01589, using the same N252 component designation. The code reads the same way on either brand because they draw from one shared fault code table.

What to do next

Check the passenger side curtain connector before anything else, especially if the windshield, headliner, or pillar trim has been off recently. Next, measure resistance at the module connector and compare it against the value the factory service data calls for.
