Code 12 on a Subaru points at the passenger airbag circuit reading open, shorted, or shorted to ground. The control unit cannot confirm a healthy firing path to the passenger inflator, so it shuts the system down.
The passenger loop runs from the airbag control unit, along the harness behind the dash, to the connector at the instrument panel airbag. A small test current travels that path and the module measures what comes back. Any reading outside the expected window, whether from a break, a short between wires, or a wire on ground, sets code 12.
Unlike the driver side, this circuit has no rotating joint in it, so the usual causes are connectors and harness damage instead of a worn ribbon. That makes recent work behind the dash the first thing worth asking about. Glovebox repairs, stereo installs, and heater work all put hands near the passenger airbag connector.
Code 12 is a live circuit reading, not a stored deployment record. The control unit rechecks the passenger loop on every key cycle, and the code goes away on its own when the reading returns to normal. Deployment records are permanent once written, do not respond to scan tool clears, and come out only through a module reset.
Clearing the module without fixing the circuit does not accomplish anything here. The control unit tests the passenger loop again immediately and stores the same code. Repair the connector, the harness, or the airbag, then confirm the light stays off through a full key cycle. Subaru assigns code 12 to the passenger airbag circuit, in the same short numeric format it uses for the rest of its SRS codes. It pairs with code 11 on the driver side, and the two are diagnosed the same way apart from the roll connector.
Drop the glovebox and check the yellow connector at the passenger airbag first, because an unlatched plug after dash work is the most common finding. Inspect the harness where it passes brackets and sharp edges. Then read the loop at the control unit to separate harness from inflator.
