What 01638 means

G256 is a small accelerometer mounted low in the driver side rear door area or the C-pillar, where it can feel a side impact before the main module does. It reports to the restraint controller over a dedicated line and runs its own internal self test. When the sensor answers with a fault status, fails its test, or stops answering in a way the module classifies as a hardware problem, 01638 goes into memory.

A hardware entry says more than a plain wiring complaint. The module has decided the sensor unit itself is not behaving, which usually means the sensor, its internal electronics, or the physical mounting. Sensors of this type need to be bolted tight to the body at the correct torque, because a loose sensor reads the wrong forces and the module treats that as an unreliable part.

Common causes

• A sensor loosened by rear door, quarter panel, or trim work and no longer torqued to the body
• Internal failure of the G256 accelerometer after age, heat, or an impact
• Water intrusion at the sensor mounting point from a bad door seal or plugged drain
• A sensor replaced with a unit that does not match the factory part for that chassis
• Corroded or damaged connector pins at the sensor pigtail
• Prior collision damage in the rear quarter that stressed the sensor bracket

Crash data or hardware fault?

The module classifies this one as a hardware fault, meaning it believes a physical part has failed instead of reporting a simple open or short. It is still not crash data. Crash data is the permanent record written when airbags actually deploy, and it survives every attempt to erase it with a scan tool. A hardware fault like 01638 can clear once the failed part is replaced.

Does our reset clear it?

If G256 is bad right now, resetting the module changes nothing, because the module will re-interrogate the sensor and log the same fault. Replace or resecure the sensor first.
