Audi and Volkswagen store 01588 for the driver side head curtain airbag igniter, the squib labeled N251. The module measured that firing circuit, got a value it will not accept, and disabled the system.
N251 is the igniter inside the curtain airbag that runs along the driver side roof rail above the door openings. Each time the ignition cycles, the restraint module pushes a small test current through that squib and reads the resistance that comes back. A value that sits too high, too low, or shorted against another wire gets recorded as 01588 and the warning lamp comes on.
The curtain stretches from the A-pillar back to the C-pillar, so its wiring travels a long way behind the headliner and down through pillar trim. Everything in that path is included in the measurement: the module pin, the harness, the connector at the curtain, and the igniter winding itself. A break at any point in the run looks identical to the module.
The module is reading this circuit right now and reporting what it sees, which makes 01588 a live fault rather than a crash record. Live faults come and go with the condition of the wiring. A crash record is written once, at the moment of deployment, and it stays in module memory whether the circuit is good or not.
Do not expect a reset to solve 01588 by itself. The module is telling you about a genuine electrical condition on the N251 loop, and clearing memory without repairing that loop only buys you the time it takes to run the next self test. Repair the connector, harness, or curtain before anything else. When the car has also been in a wreck and the module holds deployment data behind this code, mail the module to us and we clear that record.
Both Audi and Volkswagen use 01588 with the same definition, since the two share the Volkswagen Audi Group fault code list and the N251 component label. A car from either brand with roof rail curtains can set it.
Drop the A-pillar trim and check that the curtain connector is fully seated and clean, since a connector that was never latched after other work is the usual answer. From there, measure the loop resistance at the module connector to decide whether the problem is in the harness or inside the curtain.
