What B2900 means

Ford modules store the vehicle's VIN and compare it against what the powertrain control module reports on the network. When the two do not agree, the module that noticed the difference sets B2900. The code is about identification data, not about restraints, sensors, or wiring in the airbag system.

Scanning a vehicle for an airbag light and finding B2900 in the list can send a repair sideways. The code does explain itself once you know a module has been swapped, and it should be sorted out separately from whatever is keeping the airbag lamp on.

Common causes

• A used or salvage module installed from a different vehicle
• A replacement module fitted without the VIN being programmed
• A powertrain control module replaced and programmed to a different VIN
• Programming interrupted before the VIN was written
• An incorrect VIN entered by hand during a previous repair

Crash data or hardware fault?

B2900 does not fall into the crash data or circuit categories at all. Crash data is a permanent deployment record inside a restraint module, and circuit codes follow live resistance readings. This one reports a mismatch in stored identification data, which is corrected by programming rather than by repair.

Does our reset clear it?

Our mail-in module reset clears fault memory and crash data from restraint modules. It does not write VIN data into a powertrain module or any other controller, and it is not the service for B2900. Correcting this code means programming the right VIN into whichever module holds the wrong one, done on the vehicle.
