What B2761-49 means

Side impact sensors mount low in the pillar structure, close to where a striking vehicle would make contact. The left B-pillar unit tells the ORC how hard the driver side is being hit so the module can decide whether to fire the seat side airbag and the curtain. When that sensor fails its own electronic self check, the ORC has no reliable input for that zone.

The -49 failure type means the sensor diagnosed itself rather than the module finding a wiring problem. Sensors mounted in a pillar spend their lives absorbing door slams, car wash spray, and water that runs down inside the pillar when a drain plugs. Any of that can end an accelerometer, and none of it shows on the outside of the part.

Common causes

• A failed accelerometer element inside the sensor after years of door slam shock
• Water running down the inside of the pillar and reaching the sensor body
• Corroded connector pins at the sensor from moisture in the door opening
• Damage from a previous side impact that the sensor survived electrically but not for long
• A used sensor from a donor vehicle that was already compromised when installed

Crash data or hardware fault?

B2761-49 is a hardware fault a component is reporting about itself, and it stays live until the part changes. Clear it and it comes right back on the next key cycle. Stored crash data is the other category entirely: written at the moment of deployment, latched into module memory, untouchable with a scan tool, and removed only by a module reset.

Does our reset clear it?

The mail-in reset addresses deployment records inside the ORC and nothing else. It will not clear a sensor that is reporting bad internal electronics. If the truck was hit on the driver side and the module holds both a crash record and this code, replace the sensor, finish the body and harness repairs, then send the module in so the deployment data comes out.
