What B1BBC means

The module adds up the readings from the seat's weight sensors and compares the total against its stored baseline. When the arithmetic produces a number below zero, something in that chain is wrong. Either the baseline was learned under the wrong conditions, or the seat is now physically lighter than it was when the calibration was stored.

This code is a useful clue rather than a dead end. A negative total usually means the seat was calibrated with weight on it, or that something has been removed from the seat since. Both of those are correctable without replacing parts. Reading the individual sensor values first will show whether the whole seat is off or one corner is dragging the total down.

Common causes

• Calibration performed with an object, a person, or a child seat on the cushion
• Seat cushion, trim, or hardware removed after the baseline was stored
• Heavy seat covers or accessories present during calibration and removed afterward
• A weight sensor reading drifting low and dragging the total below zero
• Seat fasteners loosened so part of the seat's weight is no longer on the sensors

Crash data or hardware fault?

This is grouped with hardware because it reports the system's own calculated state rather than a single wire's resistance. It is also unrelated to crash data, which the airbag module writes permanently when a deployment happens and which no scan tool can remove. A negative weight result can be corrected on the vehicle.

Does our reset clear it?

Sending a module in for a reset does not recalculate seat weight. The occupant classification system has to be recalibrated on the vehicle with the seat truly empty. Our mail-in reset service exists for airbag modules that hold crash data or a stored internal hardware fault, and it is not a substitute for the seat calibration procedure.
