51-XX covers an internal failure inside the Honda SRS unit itself, and codes 51 through 58 all land in this group. The module is reporting that one of its own circuits failed a self test rather than pointing at anything out in the car.
Every time the ignition comes on, the SRS unit runs a check on its own hardware: memory, firing drivers, internal power supply, and the safing circuit. When one of those checks fails, the unit has no honest way to promise it can fire an airbag, so it stores a 51 series code and shuts the system down. The fault sits inside the box on the floor tunnel or under the center console.
This group is different from the circuit codes because there is no connector to reseat and no harness to trace. Honda splits the internal faults across 51 through 58 to describe which part of the unit failed, though all of them point back to the same piece of hardware. Confirming it usually means ruling out power, ground, and the connectors at the unit before condemning the module.
Hardware is the family here, meaning the code describes the module itself rather than a loop out in the harness. Crash data is a separate record, written after a deployment and locked in memory where a scan tool cannot reach it. A module can hold both at once: deployment data from a wreck and an internal fault that showed up afterward.
