B1884 is a fault in the passenger airbag deactivation indicator circuit. PAD stands for passenger airbag deactivation, the key-operated switch Ford put in trucks where a rear-facing child seat has to ride up front.
Regular cab pickups have no back seat, so Ford gave them a switch that turns the passenger airbag off, along with a lit indicator so the driver can see which state the system is in. At every key on the restraints control module briefly proves out that indicator, then keeps watching the circuit. When it reads an open or a short to ground on the indicator circuit for more than a couple of seconds, it stores B1884 and lights the main airbag warning lamp.
What throws people is the fault sitting in an indicator circuit rather than in an airbag. The module cannot confirm the occupant is being told the truth about the passenger bag, so it treats the whole arrangement as unreliable and disables the passenger airbag as a fail-safe. A small bulb ends up disabling a restraint.
Circuit fault, and a low-voltage indicator circuit at that. No crash data is involved. The repair is at the switch and its wiring, and the airbag module is almost never the failed part on this one.
No, and this is a code where sending in a module would be wasted money. Nothing stored in the module's memory is causing B1884. Replace the bulb or the switch assembly, confirm the indicator proves out at key on, and the code clears itself. B1884 belongs to Ford trucks and SUVs fitted with the PAD switch, which covers F-150 and Super Duty pickups and the Ranger through the late 1990s and 2000s, along with the Mazda pickups built alongside the Ranger. Vehicles without a passenger airbag on and off switch do not use this code.
Turn the key on and watch the PAD indicator. If it never lights during the prove-out, the bulb is the first thing to check, and on many of these the switch assembly comes out with a couple of fasteners. Where the bulb is good, back-probe the circuit at the switch connector rather than at the module. Only after the wiring and the switch are ruled out is the module worth considering.
