What B1684 means

Restraint modules carry configuration data that tells them what hardware the vehicle has: which airbags, which sensors, which occupant detection system. When a device in that list is missing its configuration, the module cannot decide how to treat it and stores a code instead of guessing. B1684 is that message in its most general form.

The wording leaves out the device, so the scan data on the car does the rest of the work. Codes stored alongside it usually name the component involved, and the repair history often explains how the configuration got out of step. This code shows up most often after a module, a sensor, or a seat component has been replaced.

• A replacement module installed without being configured for this vehicle
• A component added or removed that the module's configuration does not match
• A salvage module carrying configuration from a different vehicle
• An occupant detection or sensor assembly that was never set up after replacement

Crash data or hardware fault?
